P2 Teams!

A lot has changed in the last 30 years—cell-phones got smaller, and then they got bigger! The internet went from being a strange fad used by only a few people to being something practically everybody uses.  And you can now search an entire planet’s worth of knowledge using your voice.

Along with all these crazy technological advances, there’s something else that has changed—and not necessarily for the better. Youth sports are a lot different than they once were. Stat Rats track the batting averages of 6 year olds and 7th graders are recruited by college coaches! Performance Plus is not alone in thinking things have gone a little overboard.

Our competitive baseball teams do not feature the win-at-all costs mentality that plagues the landscape of youth sports. Instead, we focus on complete player development. Is winning nice? Absolutely! But if you show me a team that only cares about winning, I’ll show you a team that’s not worth being a part of.

At Performance Plus we believe if we teach kids to play the game the right way and create an environment that encourages teamwork, personal responsibility, and respect, winning will take care of itself. That’s not to say we don’t push our athletes, but we always make sure it is in their best interest and not in the best interest of a vicarious coach!

When we started teams, we were weary. We didn’t want to get bogged down with angry parents and nasty, opposing coaches, but, by sticking to our values, we’ve managed to avoid the pitfalls and we’re very proud to say we’ve been a positive influence on the players who have come through our program.

If you’re interested in learning more about our team philosophy, check out this great article St. Louis Cardinal’s manager Mike Matheny wrote when he coached his son’s little league team. The mentality Matheny outlines in the article is one of the ingredients we used to create our team programs.
